Looking to travel eastern europe once covid calms down. All countries in that area are currently of interest as have never travelled there, with extra interest in Ukraine due to my heritage.
Anyone been or have considered travelling there? Any tips or must do's from what you know?
How cheap can you realistically expect travelling that area?
As a female solo traveller I should be relatively safe in most of those countries?
Thanks xx
I can recommend the Baltic countries, they are all very different from each other but great in their own way. I did a trip last year from Helsinki to Vilnius and had a great time, the local people are all very friendly, food is nice and beer is cheap (not Finland)
I think the Balkans are an underrated and must visit place. I worked and lived in Sarajevo, Bosnia& Herzegovina for a few months, and I cannot recommend Bosnia enough. The unique blend of Turkish architecture, Yugoslav architecture and Austro-Hungarian architecture is truly beautiful. The history of Bosnia makes it an interesting and complex place to visit. I would be happy to share a list of what to see and do in Sarajevo. For a relatively small country, Bosnia has so much to offer! Bosnia is absolutely one of my favorite countries--hoping to move there permanently.
I also visited Montenegro and fell in love with the country. If your're a nature lover, I would recommend hiking in Durmitor national park. I also traveled to Croatia and Slovenia, and deeply enjoyed Slovenia. Slovenia, like someone in an earlier post mentioned, has a more Central and even Western European feel. Overall, the Balkans is my favorite region in Europe and I think it has much to offer and much to explore. Additionally, because it's off the beaten path, you can find some real gems there.
I would avoid the touristy places in Croatia. There are loads of small beach towns in Croatia and Montenegro that are less packed (and a little cheaper!).
As a 20-something female I never once felt unsafe throughout the region. I would suggest learning a few things in the local languages, as probably only 15% of the people I interacted with on a day-to-day basis spoke any English. However, people were patient when I spoke my limited Bosnian.
I hope you enjoy your travels! Cheers!
I've personally been to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. During my time in these countries I haven't felt unsafe at any moment. I found that locals were really nice and usually willing to help out if necessary.
In Montenegro I stayed in Bar, which is a lot less touristy than Dubrovnik for example (and a lot cheaper!!). I rented an apartment for a few days (with an ocean view😍), I can't remember how much I paid for it, but it was pretty cheap.
I do want to point out that taking a taxi in some Eastern European countries can be dangerous, especially for a woman travelling alone. Therefore, I would recommend taking public transport as much as possible. If you really do have to take a taxi, ask the people working at the hostel to book one for you. They usually book with the same company and know that they are trustworthy.
I don't remember how much I spent on my trip, but a decent hostel is usually between €15,- and €20,- . In my experience, spending a little bit more for a better location is almost always worth it. I found that some of the cheaper hostels I stayed in weren't always in the best neighbourhood and that made me uncomfortable sometimes. Things like food and alcohol are usually pretty cheap compared to Western Europe and local transport is really affordable too. Just keep in mind that you might arrive a little later than the scheduled arrival time😊
All of this is from personal experience, but I hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please let me know. I had an amazing time in Eastern Europe and I wish you a lot of fun on your trip!!
What place would you recommend to visit in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina? Did you feel safe there, any advice or things to know before traveling there?
Montenegro & Bosnia and Herzegovina are country's I can recommend. Especially Sarajevo made a lot of impression on me. All the scars of the war are still so visible in that city. Slovenia is also a really cute country but not really Eastern Europe (more central I think). If you have questions, don't bother asking!
I have been to Poland and Croatia out of those and both are very beautiful! Krakow is stunning. I'm not sure if it is regarded as a party city but when I was there, there was a lot of night life. If you can, visit Auschwitz. It may not be for everyone but it certainly is eye opening and very interesting. You have to take a guided tour but I thought it was worth it! In Poland in the mountains there are thermal outdoor pools, which is amazing with great views, and they have slides, hot tubs etc and on the way up you pass some lovely villages with wooden houses. There was one guy selling beautiful wooden ornaments in his home and had a display of original Polish farming equipment. Poland is so worth visiting, it's diverse and the cities are very different from those in Western Europe!
Croatia is another stunning place. The number one thing I would reccommend there is to visit Plitvice Lakes. I'm sure you've seen photos of it but in person it's even more impressive. It can get very busy so make sure you arrive early! A couple of places I'd recommend in Croatia would be Pula and Rovinj. Very nice towns with plenty to see and you can easily take boat rides from the harbours where you can see dolphins!
i'm going to cry because i typed so much and then accidentaly refreshed the page so here we go again, if you have any questions just ask ahah I've personally been to Russia, Czech Republic, Poland, Croatia and Hungary so i can't really talk about Ukraine, sorry. however, i can speak about the safety in these countries. The costs are different per person and country so if you name a country i can give you the costs that i spend. I typed a whole ass page with a lot of information about the safety of each country but if you have a specific country in your head of the ones i just named, please let me know so i can give my information of that country. The things i can say is that the Czech Republic, Poland and Croatia are safe for female solo travellers. with Russia and Hungary it really depends where you are going, especially Russia since it's so big.
I hope i can help you further with this question so just let me know if you have a specific country in mind!
