I have just booked a short trip to Athens as i need to get away from work for a few days. Has anyone got any recommendations on cafes, restaurants, bars things to do etc.
Hi! I would recommend finding accommodations in the Monastiraki area. The market and surrounding area is amazing at night. You must go to the acropolis (although this is a given. Go EARLY in the morning. You do not want to be climbing that mountain mid day when it is scorching hot!! The acropolis museum is also a must-see. Make sure to also go to Syntagma Square. The subway system is pretty good in athens too and is so cool because there is ancient ruins in the subway! As they were building the subway system they uncovered lots of ruins from the city that Athens was built upon. For cafes and restaurants you really cant go wrong anywhere BUT my main recommendation for a gyro and souvlaki is Bairaktaris Taverna is Monastiraki. I'd also suggest taking the boat from Pireaus (port in Athens) to Aegina island for a day. Only a 40 minute ride and it's a beautiful island tgat many Athens locals go to in their free time.
Sorry this is not super cohesive! but I hope it was helpful. I have been to Athens countless times and am so sad I had to cancel my trip back to Greece this summer :(
