I'm planning on travelling in Europe solo for a few months on a gap year (on a budget). Any ideas about where I should go? I'd rather not always be in cities and but would still like to visit popular places with other backpackers :)

Also in some parts of Europe, Flix bus is a lot cheaper than the train. To get from Heidelberg to Frankfurt by train was 18 euros or 4 euros by Flix bus.
Look at doing Workaway. I spent a month in Italy for 40 euros! This is a good video about the concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuc4alEYdd8&t=5s
Scandinavia is beautiful but a little pricy. But with a few hacks, it can be really affordable: - Definitely go camping! There are cheap campsites everywhere, even in big cities like Oslo. That was also a great way to meet people and e.g. go on hikes together. - Interrail around! Train prices are high and the services are good - so you definitely get your money's worth with an Interrail ticket. - Buy food beforehand! This was the very budget solution we did when interrailing in Scandinavia. We started in Germany and loaded up our backpacks with things like couscous, porridge, powdered sauces and other dried ingredients. So for the first week we only had to buy fresh foods - saved us lots of money.
St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut in Austria is a beautiful town near Salzburg. It’s a good in winter and summer and its an easy to get to. ☺️
I'm also hoping to travel Europe at some point in my gap year! No idea where yet but will see where the year takes me....
Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland is incredible - a bit expensive but 100% worth it. The backpacker scene isn't great, but contiki and topdeck tours do pass through... so most days there are young travellers around. Otherwise, you could stay in Interlaken which is nearby and more popular with travellers. I also really loved Slovenia - it is significantly more affordable and Lake Bled is beautiful in the summer.
